Getting Dirt Under Our Fingernails: Sermon delivered on August 30th, 2015

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. […] Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.  [James 1:22, 27]

So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” […] You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”  Then he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition!  For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’  But you say that if anyone tells father or mother, ‘Whatever support you might have had from me is Corban’ (that is, an offering to God)—then you no longer permit doing anything for a father or mother, thus making void the word of God through your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many things like this.”
[Mark 7:5, 8-13]

Shield of Faith = +10 to Fortitude: Sermon delivered on August 23rd, 2015

Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.
Psalm 34:12-15]

Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. [Ephesians 6:11-12]

A Double Portion of God: Sermon delivered on August 9th, 2015

Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.” He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. [1 Kings 19:5b-8]

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. [Psalm 34:7-8]

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life.

[John 6:35, 47-48]

    First Church

First and foremost we are a serving church - throughout nearly three centuries we have been serving the people of Concord and the world.

We are a welcoming church -- welcoming children, youth, and adults, seekers and settled, doubtful and faithful, and creating a community united in Christ's love for us all.

We are a church growing in Christ -- not having all the answers but growing in faith, in love, in working for a just and peaceful world, people learning the way of Jesus together, and welcoming others to learn with us.

    Come and see!
