Sabbatical Post Script #28 (5) Part 4 of Mugdock Castle

5/29/2020

Of the many reasons I loved touring Mugdock Castle, one of the top three is that I finally felt like I got a sense for the whole village aspect of large castle - like we see in the movies.

Within the walls of Mugdock are CENTURIES of add on buildings, which I'm sure were used for a wide variety of different activities over the years.

Below is another building, attached to the outer-wall, that ended up being paved near the end of the time the building was used.

The next outer building was never paved, and now houses a lovely wildflower garden. :)

Here comes my FAVORITE outer building, again build as part of the outer wall.  It's much smaller than the others...

As I stepped closer, and saw the metal cage, I thought "Oh! This was the well house and they've blocked off the well so that no one can fall down the well..."
Picture
However, as you'll see from the last picture for this week... I was wrong.  This wasn't a well.  (Or, perhaps is WAS one hundreds of years ago, with a different water table...) This is an escape hole!!! WHAT!?  So cool. :)
Picture
It's a REALLY good thing that the grate was there - because I SO wanted to slide down the hole and out to the forest below. :)

Next week, we'll fast forward in history to (I'm guessing) the 1600's and beyond.  The architecture of the castle becomes more impressive (and preserved) as we head back towards the entrance and this time (standing in front of the castle) head to the right, towards the tower.

Blessings on your Journey,
Pastor Emilia

    Post Scripts

In the summer of 2019 Rev. Emilia Halstead took a 3 month sabbatical.  Seven weeks of that time she spend in Scotland.  This series began on the weekly e-mail of the church.  In an effort to make it available to more people, we've moved it here to our website.
