Welcome to Part Two of our tour of Mugdock Castle! Last week we left off at the front gate, this week I'm going to show you the two rooms behind the front wall to the LEFT of the entrance.
If you're anything like me, while touring a historic place, I always try to imagine myself "there" while the place was still active. But with THIS castle, because it was in use until 1945 (since at least the 1300's) that's a LOT of costume changes! :)
To help with that, I invite you to watch this role-play video of a French dressmaker (by Moonlight Cottage ASMR), making you a gown. She will show you the different costumes from the Roman era until the early 1900's so that you can choose the style you want to wear. Pay attention to the intense fashion changes from the 1300's to the early 1900's! All of those fashions would have been present in this castle!
All set with your costume in mind? Then let's step back in time and into the first room on the left...

Newer parts of the castle have more signs, like at the front entrance to help visitors understand how the different areas would have been used. Unfortunately, the older sections do not - so we'll have to use our own imagination to discern what might have gone on in these two rooms. What do you think this room was used for? Without a roof, (or second floor) it's got a great view of the tower.
The second room on this wall is larger than the first and further away from the entrance. Perhaps it's where the women and children spent their time, from the 1300 to 1500's?
It also has a fire place, and a clear indication that there was a second floor to this wing of the castle at one time. If you're wondering if it might have been the kitchen, most likely not - and I'll show you why I think so, in next weeks photos. :)
This room also has a window to the front of the castle, where as the smaller one does not. Can you imagine all of the things that this window has seen, both inside and outside the castle? If only windows and walls could speak...
Ancient ruins (even those from 1945) remind me that all things made by human hands will not last forever. It is God's creation that is eternal AND ever evolving.
